Traditional Glühwein

Cinnamon and cloves make this Glühwein or mulled wine a perfect hot drink for the winter holidays. Plus, it make your house smell great while it simmers.

Ingredients

  • 1 small lemon
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 6 - 8 whole cloves
  • 1/4 of a cup of sugar
  • 1 750 ml bottle of red wine

Instructions

  1. Slice lemon into wedges.
  2. Put everything into a medium saucepan.
  3. Simmer on low (no boiling!) for 15 - 30 mins.
  4. Set aside to cool for a bit.
  5. Ladle or strain into hot wine into mugs or heatproof glasses.
  6. Sip and feel the glow!

Recipe Notes

- More sugar can be added to individual mugs to taste.
- Instead of regular sugar you can use honey.
- Orange can be substituted or added to the lemon.
- Experiment with adding 2 juniper berries, a few gratings of nutmeg, 3 cardamon pods or 1 star anise.
